Requests continue to be the main part of our programming output. We guarantee to read out every request that comes into the station, whether ‘phoned in, written in, sent via our team of request collectors or via the Radio Enfield website. In most cases we can always find the actual record chosen (after nearly 35 years we have a pretty good idea of what artists are popular) and if we don't have the actual record can usually find something similar or another record by the same artist. The main thing is you will certainly hear your name on the radio and become the most famous person in your ward!
However, as well as requests, local news and information has also been a regular part of the programmes. We have had many guests from the local area take part in interviews, ranging from the Mayors, local MPs, leaders of other local organisations and so on - we have even had a local banjo and mandolin band and a school choir perform 'live' in the control room!
Many well known entertainers have taken part in interviews for Radio Enfield, including Cliff Richard, Helen Shapiro, Gerry Marsden (from Gerry & The Pacemakers), Peter Noone (from Herman's Hermits), Les Dennis, Clem Cattini (session musician and drummer from The Tornados) and so on.
We were particularly pleased and proud to welcome orchestra leader Geoff Love to the studios. Geoff lived in Bush Hill Park and told us about his musical career with so many international stars including Shirley Bassey, Connie Francis, Max Bygraves, Russ Conway and others and his other orchestra known as Manuel and his Music of the Mountains. As Manuel, Geoff had a Top 10 hit in 1976 with Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto de Aranjuez which became a popular request on Radio Enfield. He told us stories behind many of the hit records by other artists he had played on, which were featured in the programme. Sadly, Geoff died some years later but the programme stands as a fitting tribute to his career.
